Born and raised in Indiana, Dean worked in high school as a yearbook photographer and as a lab technician at the local weekly newspaper. It was there that his desire to work as a photojournalist began. He attended Ball State University where, in between classes over two semesters, he worked for the Ball State Daily News.

After two years in south Florida, Dean moved to Richmond, Virginia in 1989 and began doing freelance photography in 1993. He has handled recurring assignments for the New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, Los Angeles Times, the Associated Press and others. His work has been selected to appear in Time, Newsweek, Sports Illustrated, U. S. News and World Report, MSNBC Pictures of the Week, BBC World News and hundreds of other newspapers, and magazines. Now a staff photographer at the Richmond Times-Dispatch, he currently lives north of Richmond with his wife and three children.

Dean is a member of the National Press Photographers Association and the Virginia News Photographers Association, and he has been honored with multiple awards from each for his work.
